Khalili – on racing on Russian tracks: “You freeze just when you need to stop, reload”

Bronze medalist at the Beijing Olympics Karim Khalili told about the features of biathlon competitions in Russia.

Russian and Belarusian athletes have been suspended from participating in international tournaments due to the situation in Ukraine. At the moment, the Russian Biathlon Cup is taking place, which will end in February.

– You are used to the tracks of international competitions. Do they surprise you with something inside Russia?

– In principle, in Russia, all the tracks are equally familiar to us, we have already run them. There is nothing new in this regard. Of course, there is a difference with European roads. We have longer and longer climbs, and in Europe all the tracks are faster.

– So there is a different specificity here? Need to work more.

– Yes it’s possible. I note that in Europe there is faster snow, you have to be able to maintain your speed throughout the race.

– We have slow snow due to the colder weather?

– Well, of course, here it was minus 30 degrees in mid-December, and even in Rybinsk it was very cold before the competition. The snow here is frozen, does not have time to move away from such temperatures. I felt good in the first races.

– The skiers didn’t really complain about the cold, although they ran in minus 25. But you have guns, bullets, you have to lie on frozen mats. What’s it like to play in this weather?

– The biggest problem is with aiming and shooting. You freeze just when you need to stop, reload, etc. These pauses create the main discomfort. Of course, if you go out just to roll in such a gel, you can dress warmer, cover your face, and there won’t be any particular problems, Khalili told .
