“It was a bit strange for Ole and me to end up with the Chinese team without even finishing the season.” Interview with Daria Domracheva

– Rumors say that you are now in Monaco. How long ago?

– At the moment we are in Norway, after all, it is more pleasant to spend the New Year holidays in winter. And we live in Monaco. Back from China, we spent the summer in Minsk, and since September we have moved to the principality, where we are most of the time.

And you definitely keep in shape. Where is there at all to train, on this densely populated area?

– Today we do not need to conduct the training that professional athletes need. Most often, the daily load includes a one-hour cross, some strength training, stretching, which helps keep in shape. It is not a long development work.

Sometimes we go out for cycling, there are many directions for such activity around. Yes, and there is where to run in Monaco. Whether the coast or the nearest mountains with hills, you can choose interesting routes with beautiful views. The nearest ski slope is two hours away, we haven’t been there yet, but plan to.

What is your status at work?

– Now I devote time to my daughter and to my further studies. There are several ideas and ideas, but it is too early to talk about them.

– Complementary training – what is it?

— Dietetics and nutrition. The experience of working in China, where there is a completely different food culture, gave the idea to delve a little into this area of knowledge. During the work, we encountered some difficulties in the diet of athletes. In our opinion, their preferences did not quite match the understanding of good nutrition for those involved in endurance sports. During my own sports career, serious experience has accumulated in this area, now it’s time to expand the theoretical part.

In general, it seems to me that the principles of healthy eating should be taught in school without fail. This knowledge is really important, it will certainly be useful in life, because the health of every person depends on it. The market offers a huge selection of absolutely different quality products. Out of ignorance it is easy for people not to prefer the healthiest ones, although it is not at all difficult to eat tasty, varied and balanced, it is only a matter of awareness and habit .

– Where exactly do you learn a new specialty?

– The educational institution is located in Moscow. I study online.

– How did you separate from the Chinese team?

– After the end of the Olympics, we returned home, the whole team went into quarantine.

– Were you surprised when the Chinese did not respond to your husband about the extension or non-renewal of the contract? At least you had the right to count on “yes” or “no”. Without forgetting “thank you”.

– It seems to me that after the Olympics, there were a lot of ambiguities in the very system of sports management in the country. The management was puzzled by the problems of further development of winter sports. It was decided in which direction to go, who would be responsible for what. At some point we just stopped waiting for an answer and moved on to other plans.

— What experience has working in China brought you? And was it only positive?

— Clearly, China has given us a lot, as specialists. The experience, while extreme in many ways, was certainly positive.

– Has Chinese biathlon remained focused on domestic tournaments or has it started to pay closer attention to international starts there?

– Hard to say. We are in contact with the athletes, we know that part of the team was to come to the World Cup stage in France. As a result, everything was postponed, the Chinese missed Pokljuka and Ruhpolding. Based on the experience of 2021, we doubt the team will even take part in the World Cup this season. But there is still hope for the World Cup.

– Which Chinese names will declare themselves loud and clear in biathlon in the near future?

— It would be possible to talk about it with confidence if the Chinese team continued a systematic and targeted preparation to participate in all competitions. There are promising athletes in the team, as we have seen this last season by the progression of some of them from race to race. But today many are training without shooting at all, others have been in quarantine for a long time, someone completely misses the competitive season, including even domestic competitions. I don’t know exactly the current realities, but what we see indicates the absence of a clear structure in the national team.

– Who replaced you as coach of the Chinese team?

– According to the guys, a Chinese specialist worked with those who decided to train in the team.

– Did you communicate with the Russian coach Andrey Prokunin, who managed one of the Chinese clubs?

No, we have not contacted. If Andrey has any questions, they are always ready to share their experience.

Would you be willing to visit China later as a tourist?

— Yes, I liked the culture of this country, I didn’t manage to visit many beautiful places, but I would like to. In any case, if we plan such a trip, it will be during a period free of all kinds of quarantines.

– Should Russian sport consider moving to Asia? Will there be a good level of competition and organization of departures?

– With competition in strong sports – figure skating, short track, diving – in Asia, of course, everything is in order. There are more problems in the weaker disciplines.

They know how to organize tournaments in China and other Asian countries, but in general the question is complex and multifaceted, you have to weigh the pros and cons. Of course, we must maintain and develop cooperation with Asian sports federations, but at the same time strive to return to the international scene. Every athlete since childhood dreams of a world podium, and Asian sports, under normal epidemiological conditions, still gravitate towards international tournaments. It would be deeply wrong to be offended by the rest of the world and turn completely to one part of the world.

– Has Ole Einar kept his coaching ambitions?

– Working with the team is a very interesting process, assuming the coaching of the Chinese national team, Ole, of course, was motivated to take what he started to a serious level. It was a bit strange for both of us to finish the job without even finishing the season.

– How are the clothing brands developing, yours and your husband’s?

– Ole isn’t spending time on this today. I would like to update the collection by summer.
