russian biathlete Daniil Serokhvostov suggested why the five-time Norwegian Olympic champion Johannes Boe demonstrates such a level of performance in the current season.
Johannes Boe leads the overall World Cup standings this season with 1,139 points. On Thursday, Serokhvostov finished second in the fifth-round sprint of the Pari Commonwealth Cup in Belarus, with Eduard Latypov winning.
– You often say that the speed at the World Cup is too high, and coaches say differently, they say, you and Latypov would fight for medals. Why don’t you believe in yourself so much?
“I don’t think, we wouldn’t fight. There are very strong guys running around. Visible and visually uniform. Yeah, we didn’t run that fast that year. Even Johannes didn’t race that year like he does at the World Cup now, including him,” the correspondent reports in Serokhvostov’s words.
– Perhaps you would run the same way on the same snow?
– I’m sure.
– Do you understand why Johannes is so cool now?
“Last season was pretty bad for him. From the first stages of the Cup to the Olympics, it was quite busy and difficult. Did not show such movements as now. I think he took a break last year. He only let himself down at the Olympics. That’s why he’s been running so hard this year after such a long recovery. Yet he was often at home. I went home before the Games for two weeks, while everyone was in training camp. Much rested. Therefore, this year he runs very hard.
– Do you want to train at this level by training for example with skiers?
— Yes, I was already ready to run at this level. We just had a different preparation this year. We knew we would not be allowed. As a result, volume and strength training have been significantly increased. So we are running now. It’s harder for Karim (Khalili) because he’s muscular and feels hard on the track because of it. I have fewer muscles, I support these loads more easily. But in general, it’s hard for me too, but not in the same way as for him.
– If you compare yourself last year and now, who is stronger?
– I think last year Serokhvostov would have beaten me now (laughs). That year, we were summed up at the Olympics. Now my volume is up 20-30% from last year. That’s enough. It’s still hard for me to digest it, but I’m still running quite well on the track.
The Commonwealth Cup women’s sprint is on Friday. The live broadcast of the race will start at 10:40 a.m. Moscow time on the channel, as well as on the websites. matchtv.ru and sportbox.ru. Watch the program “Biathlon with Dmitry Guberniev” on January 29 at 1:00 p.m.
