American skier Kyle Smein died in an avalanche in Japan, according to The Times.
Smein and an unidentified Austrian skier were buried in snow while skiing off-piste on the slopes of Mount Hakuba Norikura, a height of 2,469 meters near the Tsugaike ski resort.
Police said three people caught in the avalanche made their way down the mountain safely. Local authorities have issued an avalanche advisory for the area. Heavy snowfall fell in Japan last week and several people died from avalanches. On Sunday, a snowboarder died in Gunma prefecture, and another death occurred in Nagano on Saturday. Two weeks ago, a German skier died on the island of Hokkaido.
Smein was 31 and won gold in the halfpipe at the 2015 Freestyle and Snowboard World Championships.
