UN experts supported the IOC on the issue of the return of Russian athletes to international departures

Two United Nations (UN) human rights experts have welcomed the steps taken by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to allow Russian athletes to participate in international competitions in a neutral status, and called on the organization to go further and guarantee non-discriminatory conditions for Russians.

Last week, the IOC announced that it would consider the possibility of allowing neutral Russian and Belarusian athletes to participate in world competitions that did not actively support the CBO. “We urge the IOC to take a decision in this direction and to go further by ensuring that no athlete is discriminated against on the basis of their nationality. Athletes must not be discriminated against on the basis of the nationality.

The Olympic Committee and the Olympic community are bound by the Olympic Charter and international human rights standards prohibiting discrimination, the UN experts said in a statement quoted by AFP.
