IOC expects participating countries not to boycott 2024 Olympics due to possible admission of neutral athletes from Russia and Belarus

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has said it expects all countries participating in the 2024 Games in Paris to abide by the Olympic Charter, which rules out a possible boycott of the competition if neutral athletes from Russia and Belarus are admitted.

Last week, the IOC announced that it would consider the possibility of allowing neutral Russian and Belarusian athletes to participate in world competitions that did not actively support the CBO. On February 2, the committee noted that this matter had not yet been discussed and that the organization still did not have criteria according to which individual admission to competitions could be made.

– What if some athletes refuse to compete with Russians or Belarusians?

– Over the past weeks and months, we have seen Ukrainian athletes compete against neutral athletes with a Russian or Belarusian passport. In January, the Australian Tennis Open was won by a neutral athlete with a Belarusian passport.

In the first round there was even a match between a Ukrainian and a neutral tennis player with a Russian passport. This concept is followed by professional sports leagues and tours in Europe and North America, tennis and cycling.

We expect all NOCs and their athletes participating in the Olympic Games to fully respect the Olympic Charter.

The 2024 Olympic Games in Paris will take place from July 26 to August 11, 2024.
