The title-winning Ukrainian freestyler ended the season ahead of schedule with a torn cruciate ligament in the knee.

Alexander Abramenko was seriously injured and may end his sports career. According to the Olympic freestyle champion himself, he has a rupture of the cruciate ligaments of the knee.

According to the 34-year-old athlete, this may affect the possibility of continuing professional performances, as it will take about nine months to recover from the injury alone.

“We went, had an MRI, and they gave us a diagnosis of ruptured cruciate ligament of the knee, sprain of the posterior cross and damage to the bones. That’s the standard set of freestylers.

It is only an operation, the only way to restore. I had the same thing in the other knee before the 2018 Olympics. It’s been nine months of rehab. This season is over for me.

I was disappointed that I couldn’t compete in the World Championships. I really want. Again, something prevents me from competing in team competitions.

We have to operate and we will see how the recovery goes. There may be nuances, that is, everything will be fine for ordinary life, but for our sport it can be very disturbing. If the end of a career – I will not say. We will see how things develop. Maybe I really want more, or maybe I don’t,” Abramenko told Suspilna sport.
