The International Olympic Committee (IOC) is awaiting a decision from the International Skating Union (ISU) on the final results of the Beijing 2022 Figure Skating Team Tournament, after which a decision will be made regarding the distribution of awards.
The team competition at the Beijing Games was won by the Russian team. Later it became known that Kamila Valieva, who played in the team, was suspected of violating anti-doping rules. In the doping sample of the Russian figure skater, taken at the Russian championships in December, the banned drug trimetazidine was found. The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) cleared Valieva to participate in individual competitions, where she finished fourth. The allocation of national teams following the results of the team tournament has not yet taken place.
The RUSADA Anti-Doping Disciplinary Commission later concluded that although the athlete committed an anti-doping rule violation, she bears “no fault or negligence”. RUSADA has informed the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) of this decision. Valieva escaped penalties other than the cancellation of her results as of the sample date of December 25, 2021. WADA reserves the right to challenge this verdict with CAS.
“Given that the case concerns a doping test which was carried out outside the Olympics but which affected the results of the team and individual competitions, the IOC hopes that the matter will be resolved as soon as possible. also in the interest of all parties involved, especially the athletes who have not yet been able to receive their Beijing 2022 medals. Only the completion of the investigation of the case will allow the ISU to announce the final results of the team tournament, and the IOC to decide the distribution of medals, USA Today quotes the press release from the IOC.
ISU in the same document confirmed its intention to exercise the right of appeal before the CAS.
