Italian skier Elena Fanchini has died at the age of 37 following a serious illness, according to the website of the Italian Winter Sports Federation (FISI).
The athlete died on Wednesday at her home in Solato, near Brescia. Fankini last competed in December 2017. The Italians’ younger sisters Nadia and Sabrina are also professional skiers.
“In these sad hours, President Flavio Roda and the entire FISI family all have thoughts with Nadia, Sabrina, father Sandro and mother Giusi,” the federation said in a statement.
Fankini is a silver medalist at the 2005 World Downhill Championships, a two-time World Cup stage winner.
