“The European Parliament resolution contradicts the unifying mission of the Olympic Games” – IOC

The European Parliament resolution condemning the possible participation of Russian athletes in the 2024 Olympic Games under a neutral flag is contrary to the unifying mission of the Games. This was stated by the press service of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

Earlier, the European Parliament issued a resolution stating that 444 MEPs condemned the IOC, 26 voted against, 37 abstained. Lawmakers have called on the 27 EU countries and the international community to pressure the IOC to reverse its decision on whether Russians should be admitted to the competitions in a neutral status.

– First of all, it should be clarified that there is no IOC decision “to allow Russian and Belarusian athletes to participate in the qualifications for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris”. There is research on the primary concept of the conditions of participation. No decision has been made. Unfortunately, the European Parliament ignores the serious concerns expressed by the two special rapporteurs of the United Nations Human Rights Council.

The Special Rapporteurs in the field of cultural rights on contemporary forms of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance have stated: “The Olympic Committee and the Olympic community have an obligation to respect the Olympic Games and, more broadly, international human rights standards that prohibit discrimination.”

The European Parliament’s demand for “multilateral isolation” of all Russians and Belarusians clearly contradicts this assertion. The statement by the European Parliament also clearly contradicts the autonomy of sports organisations, which is an integral part of the European sports model and of the fundamental principles repeatedly recognized by the EU institutions. Furthermore, the declaration clearly contradicts the unifying peacekeeping mission of the Olympics and the Olympic Charter, repeatedly endorsed by the European Union and its member states, the IOC said in a statement.

Earlier, the IOC announced that it would consider the possibility of admitting Russian and Belarusian athletes to world starts in a neutral status, who did not actively support the CBO. IOC chief Thomas Bach has admitted that Russians could participate in the Paris Olympics without national symbols. On February 2, the committee noted that this matter had not yet been discussed and that the organization still did not have criteria according to which individual admission to competitions could be made.

The 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris will take place from July 26 to August 11.
