Russians’ absence from World Ski Championships in Slovenian Planica does not benefit anyone, Russian national team coach tells Yuri Borodavko .
These days in Malinovka (Arkhangelsk region) competitions “Champion’s Heights” are held, which are alternative starts to the World Championships held at the same time in Planica. The Russians are not participating in the World Cup by decision of the International Ski Federation (FIS) due to the situation in Ukraine.
— Alexander Bolshunov says that the real world championship is here in Malinovka, and dirty competitions in Planica. What do you think?
– I think Sasha said a little about emotions. Yet the World Cup involves athletes from all over the world in these competitions. So the real world championship is there, and we call the alternative competitions, we hold them at the same time. The best skiers in Russia, who occupy leading positions in the country, are fighting here.
In my opinion, everyone loses today – both the countries participating in the championship in Planica and us. It would be a great vacation for everyone if the Russians could participate in the World Cup. It would add intrigue and competition.
Whether or not to watch the competitions at Planica is everyone’s business. Everyone has their own priorities. I would not oppose these two tournaments. The starts are made in parallel, and all the strongest perform during these two competitions. Yes, today the situation is such that we participate in Malinovka, and the rest of the world participates in Planica. Like I said, everybody loses there, I don’t see any winners here,” Borodavko told .
