At the finish line, where there are television cameras and photographers, I will still smile. Chronicle of Veronika Stepanova

I had the opportunity to tell how I react to successes and victories. Today I’m going to tell you how I met defeat – and why the result is exactly that.

Everyone has ups and downs at work. You don’t want to see a creepy salesman, stewardess or taxi driver, do you? So why should you watch a frustrated athlete on your screens?

Breaking poles and throwing broken skis is also “interesting from the picture”, but I haven’t learned that yet. So – a standard professional smile. Like an air hostess.

For me, the reaction to losses is also a question of psychological struggle with rivals. Sometimes I’m really upset – other times a weak performance could be predicted in advance, and I’m not particularly sad.

Anyway, that’s not the kind of information I want to share. The probability that it will help competitors next time is not very high, but it does. I never talk about something like that unnecessarily. This does not fit into my concept of “Everything to gain!”

Little things don’t happen. It only seems from the outside that all skiers (biathletes, runners, etc.) train almost the same.

To some extent, this is correct: everyone has uniform and interval training on skis, strength in the gym, crosses, etc. But here the combination and intensity of the workouts are entirely up to the specific know-how and secrets of the trainers. A little underdone or overdone – and you can no longer fight for victory or a podium.

Here’s an example: I had a pretty tough inter-call after New Years, and at the end of that training cycle, I had to do some serious final training. We call them “development work”. When it comes to training, I always do 100% of what the coach says. Not 95 or 110 – namely 100%, exactly.

But due to objective reasons, I couldn’t complete that particular workout, I did about 85%. So Sorin is convinced that this is why Natalya Nepryaeva ran away from me in the skiathlon at the Russian Cup stage in Syktyvkar more than a week later. That is, “little thing” is not a trifle at all.

But this is true compared to ordinary competitions. It is clear that the main thoughts of the whole season are about how to win the main tournaments. The Olympics, the world championship, the “Champion Heights” – there are always those for which you are particularly preparing.

Nobody prepares for the main competitions of the season in the same way as last year. Even if they took place in the same place, new ideas are still needed. Even the invincible Yohaug kept changing something every year. Every change in the program is a risk. You can lose, but if you want to win, you absolutely have to experiment. If you don’t you will lose for sure, nobody needs fifth or seventh place.

Often the experiment does not work: everyone knows that Frida Karlsson is one of the best skiers in the world. And everyone saw how she “got up” last year at the Beijing Olympics. We pretty much imagine what she did and what turned out wrong – and we sympathize with her from the bottom of our hearts: she wanted to beat Johaug, it didn’t work out. And from there, she lost to almost everyone she could. I took a risk and I lost.

Natalya Nepryaeva is an incredible skier, a true champion and an example in various categories, from technique to patience. I’m sure she is now the strongest skier in the world.

To beat her at the main start, it’s not enough to prepare well, you have to take a risk in preparation. For me now there is not much difference – being second or twenty-second. My goal, my motivation is to beat Natalya at the main start of at least one race right now, when she is in her prime.

This time it didn’t work. We will analyze and think about how to make this a reality later. In the meantime, smile at the finish line!
