Deputy of the State Duma of the Russian Federation Svetlana Zhurova told “Sport Day After Day” that she was optimistic about how the issue of admitting Russians to the Olympics would be resolved.
– To what extent are such conditions for the return of Russian athletes to international competitions acceptable as a public condemnation of the OSV? How should we react, as well as our athletes, for whom the next Games could be the only chance of their career?
– If the conditions under which they are “thrown” are fixed, I do not think that any of the athletes will agree. We understand what will happen next like in Formula 1: sign a paper, kneel down… We understand that it will only get worse. Will unfold again and again. For example, you accepted one, then you will receive the second, third and fourth. So I don’t think the athletes will accept it. In this environment, certainly not.
But I can say that I have seen a number of interviews with very high-ranking former members of the IOC. For some reason, they all unanimously say, “Wait until summer.” They know something we don’t know. But they talk about it in a positive way. It made me optimistic.
The IOC announced in January that it would consider admitting to international competitions neutral Russian and Belarusian athletes who did not actively support the CBO. IOC chief Thomas Bach has admitted that Russians could participate in the 2024 Olympics in Paris without national symbols.
