‘Unlucky with weather and skiing’ – Olympic champion Spitsov explains why he couldn’t win the Demino marathon

Olympic cross-country skiing champion Denis Spitsov recounted what kept him from becoming the winner of the Demino Marathon.

The most massive ski race in Russia with 2800 participants, which took place in the Yaroslavl region, was won by Andrey Alipkin from Ryazan. He was ahead of Spitsov, who became second; third place was taken by Raul Shakirzyanov.

– A little upset, bad luck with the weather, – the correspondent quotes Spitsov. – I brought Malinovka’s skis ready, went to the finish line and was absolutely sure of victory. But the ski slope was powdered, he started to stumble, almost fell and realized there was nothing to fix. For the first time I participated in such a big marathon, I had a good experience. Tried myself the day before the Sakhalin Marathon. I hope that next year I will have the opportunity to win at Demino.

The struggle here is really stubborn, the circle is flat, it’s hard to break away. At first he walked and asked: “When did Sanya Bolshunov run away last year?” I was told: “In transit after the first round.” But in this case, I would have to walk 25 kilometers alone, and that’s not realistic, I immediately understood. The only chance was on the ups. I tried to use it, tore the group apart, we had three left. I gave all my strength, but on arrival I lost a little because of the skis.

– The day before, you won the relay at the “Champion’s Heights” in Malinovka. How was your transfer to Demino?

– I got into my car with my family, after half past seven I got there. It was snowing, the roads were icy, the conditions were quite difficult.

– Will you miss the 50 km race in Malinovka on Sunday?

“Of course, I will rest. Ahead of the Sakhalin Marathon and the Russian Championship in Tyumen, one of the main starts of the season.

“” shows the All-Russian competition “Champion Heights” (February 23 – March 5) and the Russian Ski Championship (March 18-26). On March 5, as part of Champions Heights, a men’s 50k race will be held in classic style. Watch the live broadcast starting at 9:40 a.m. (Moscow time) on and on matchtv.ru and sportbox.ru websites.
