The coach of the Russian short track team on the season without international departures: “We are raising the level of young people, we still have to grow”

Andrey Maksimov, head coach of the Russian national short track team, told that a chance had to be found to grow more in a suspended situation and raise the youth level.

On Sunday, March 12, the Russian Single Distance Championship ended in Ufa – the last big start of the current season. The Russians, against the background of the situation in Ukraine, were suspended from participating in competitions under the auspices of the International Skating Union (ISU).

– Andrey Ivanovich, how do you rate the performance of the athletes in your group during this Russian championship?

– In general, the guys behaved very well, we completed all the tasks that we set ourselves, this is the first. The main backbone of this team is from St. Petersburg. They won the men’s relay and finished third in the women’s. In addition, the girls from the Moscow team work with me. I really liked the final sprint of Nastya Konstantinova, who led her team to gold in the relay.

At the end of the last day, I would like to mention two athletes Nastya Sereda and Nastya Zheganova, who were unlucky in the 1000 m. Nastya Zheganova received a penalty for false overtaking and was a little upset. She made a tactical mistake and fell, and she was also penalized, but she still showed what she was capable of.

– Do you think the missed season will affect the level of the athletes?

– Yes, of course, it is not good that we do not participate in international competitions, but I can say that we will do our best to participate in international competitions, coming to these competitions, we have shown decent results and participated. We raise the level of youth. So we have to find a positive time to work and grow more,” Maksimov told .
