Korea rejects idea of co-hosting Olympics with North Korea

Seoul Mayor Oh Se Hoon announced that South Korea had withdrawn from co-hosting the Summer Olympics with North Korea.

According to the politician, Seoul will apply to host the 2036 Games.

“I think the 2032 strategy was doomed due to the unpredictability of inter-Korean relations,” O Se Hoon told Reuters.

In 2021, the Korean government sent a letter to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) with a proposal to host the 2032 Summer Olympics jointly with the DPRK, but the IOC Executive Board approved Brisbane, Australia as host city of the 2032 Games.

Earlier, IOC Director General Christophe de Koepper noted that 10 countries are ready to host the 2036 Olympics.

The next 33rd Summer Olympics are to be held from July 26 to August 11, 2024 in Paris.
