Over the next few years, the minimum age of participants in adult competitions will be 17 years old.

No more kids in adult figure skating tournaments. This decision was made at the congress of the International Skating Union in Thai Phuket. According to the ISU press service, participants were almost unanimous in voting for a gradual increase in the age limit from 15 to 17 years. “Because” was 100 members of the meeting, and only 16 voted “against”, two more members of Congress abstained.

The age threshold will gradually increase – next season it will remain the same (15 years), but from the 2023/24 season it will increase to 16 years, and in the 2024/25 season to 17 years. The limit applies to all disciplines-women’s and men’s singles skating, couples and ice dancing.

In resolving this issue, the ISU was guided by the conclusion of the medical commission, which refers to high injuries from overload and mental development of athletes at an early age. According to doctors, increasing the limit will give athletes more time for bone formation and help reduce injuries due to overload of fragile bones, as well as emotional and social development.

It should be noted that congressional delegates are often influenced by scandals with the Russian team at the last Olympics in Beijing. Recall that 15-year-old Kamila Valieva went into a doping scandal in the competition, and after the final in the women’s singles, she and her compatriot 17-year-old Alexandra Trusova had a public breakdown.
