FIS and IBU announce total fluoride ban from next season

The International Biathlon Union (IBU) and the International Ski Federation (FIS) have announced on their official websites a total ban on the use of any ski preparation product containing fluorine from the 2023/24 season.

The decision was made based on “obvious health risks and environmental concerns associated with fluoroparaffins”.

During the 2022/23 season, the IBU and FIS tested a device that detects the presence of fluoride. Comprehensive testing by the IBU was successfully implemented at the World Cup in Östersund. The final meetings with the technical specialists and the athletes’ committee took place during the final stage in Holmenkollen.

FIS will check athletes’ skis at competitions such as World Championships and World Cups. Testing at lower level competitions will be done on a random basis. The IBU plans inspections at every tournament held under the auspices of the union.

“We are delighted to be able to fully implement the ban on fluorinated wax in all our major competitions. This is a key step in ensuring the integrity of competition and minimizing adverse effects on health and safety. environment of this product,” said FIS Vice President Roman Kumposht.
