Olympic cross-country skiing champion Natalya Nepryaeva told RT how Norwegian journalists ignored his refusal to give an interview ahead of the Beijing Olympics.
— You almost never stop in the mixed zone. This is usually the behavior of a person who has been offended by journalists.
– Not really. I do not like it. After the race, the most important thing for an athlete is to change quickly, to wrinkle. And not to stand in the cold in wetsuits, giving interviews. All this is especially aggravated after an unsuccessful run. When there is something to think about, so to speak. As for insults… Of course, there are people who ask incorrect, and sometimes just stupid questions. However, it seems to me that a journalist, coming to a competition, should also prepare for it in one way or another. Therefore, it is annoying that people are completely disconnected, but at the same time they demand to say a few words to them.
– Did the Norwegian media contact you during the suspension?
– The last time I spoke with them was before the Olympics, and I really didn’t like the way it was done. We were at training camp, living in the same hotel with the Norwegian team and their coronavirus. When NRK reporters arrived, I immediately explained that I was preparing for the Olympics, so I didn’t want to give interviews in advance, say how many medals I plan to win, who I consider my main rivals, what I think of Teresa Johaug … In general, I think it is wrong to talk about it before the competition. Especially in front of such as the Olympic Games.
The Norwegians did not hear me – they decided to act through Borodavko. And Yuri Viktorovich is a generous person and, of course, he promised: they say, don’t worry, everything will be fine. Well, I gave them an interview. What they deserve. They no longer contacted me.
