russian biathlete Lyubov Kalinina admitted that she expected the worst from her first season at the senior level.
Kalinina, 21, is the only junior to have spent a full season at adult level in national competitions. Lyubov became the youngest participant in the Russian Cup and won silver in the national championship.
– In fact, I thought that in the first season at the adult level everything would be much worse (smiles), and I was very surprised that I managed to win a women’s medal at the Russian Championship in Izhevsk already in the first half of the season. It was a pleasant shock for me.
I couldn’t even believe it then. I had so many emotions! There were a lot of fans there, everyone supported and congratulated. It was a magical moment. I was very happy to be on the podium among such strong adult athletes. I couldn’t even understand it at first.
There were four races, and at the start I was tenth, then eighth, then sixth and I started to realize that I had a chance. But there were very difficult weather conditions, strong winds. I understood that a lot depended on the shot, and I tried to focus on that, because in terms of distance I still lose. I tried to work as best and as fast as possible on the corner, Kalinina told the Championship.
