Double Olympic champion in biathlon Dmitry Vasiliev on , he called on the issue of the admission of Russians to international tournaments to firmly defend the positions of their country.
The Executive Committee of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced on Tuesday recommendations for the admission of Russian athletes to international competitions. Recommendations include individual eligibility, neutral status, no team events, no entry for athletes associated with law enforcement.
The President of the Russian Biathlon Union, Viktor Maigurov, said in this regard that biathletes can resign from law enforcement agencies if this is the only obstacle to participation in international tournaments.
– You spoke curtly yesterday about Maigurov’s remark?
— I will always play for our athletes. Our athletes must be legally and physically protected. Including abroad. Today they will tell us there should be no soldiers, tomorrow they will tell us to crawl on our stomachs. Nobody to talk to. The leaders of the IOC and the IBU are prejudiced against the Russian Federation. They are not ready for dialogue.
– In Poland, they are determined to force Russians to sign a certain paper before performing at the European Games in this country.
– Do we generally live according to the laws or according to the decisions of the “bastards”? We have to decide if we are following the laws of sport. We must firmly defend our positions. And do not go to an agreement with this camarilla,” Vasilyev said on the air of the program “There is a theme!” on MatchTV.
In February last year, the IOC Executive Board recommended federations not to invite Russians and Belarusians to compete due to the situation in Ukraine. In many sports, athletes from both countries were suspended from starts, some federations allowed them to be neutral without national symbols. Subsequently, IOC chief Thomas Bach opposed political influence on sport and any proposal to treat Russian athletes as bearers of collective guilt.
