Russian short tracker Sofia Prosvirnova has said she plans to change sport citizenship and play for the Danish national team in the future.
According to the 25-year-old athlete, she made this decision due to family circumstances.
– The training system of the Russian national team is such that on average the team is in centralized training for three weeks with a weekly break for 11 months. I have been following this program for the past nine years. Thanks to this system, to the literacy of the training process, to the work of the specialists in the team, and only partly to my work and the desire to win, I was able to contribute to the international arena. But there is another side of the coin.
The reality is that if I decide to stay under the Russian flag, I’m forced to stay and train in the Russian Federation, which in my situation with Viktor forces me to re-establish long-distance relationships, and I need to get away from my family. The truth is that at this point I am not ready to make such sacrifices. Values change. Now, building a family and psychological health is for me on the same level as building a sports career.
This brings me to the decision to change sports nationality. At the moment I am moving to the Danish national team,” Prosvirnova wrote on social media.
Prosvirnova is a four-time winner of the world championships, five-time European champion.
