Russian national team biathlete Natalia Gerbulova in an interview with , she said she had hysteria and panic while climbing the Avachinskaya Sopka volcano in Kamchatka due to fear of falling down the slope.
Gerbulova on the Telegram channel said that she had conquered the volcano. For a biathlete, it is a tradition, she had already climbed Avachinsky Sopka.
– The ascent of the volcano was very difficult, because we had initially planned to go out at night, and we went there at night. We started at 3:30am as we wanted to meet the sunrise over the volcano. But in the middle of the path it started to snow, the visibility was gone, that is, we walked without seeing anything. We were walking with junior team coach Timur Makhambetov and turned the wrong way because we couldn’t see anything. We were walking in front and one person from our group was behind. We turn around, but he is no longer there, no one is visible. And Timur and I have already come to the vent, where the sulfur was coming off. We had to go back down on the snow and we had to go right. And so we moved on our haunches, clinging to the stones with our hands and “cats”. I had, of course, hysteria, panic, like all ordinary women. I thought I was going to fall.
– So they took a serious risk at that time?
– Not really serious. There was simply no other way. Going down straight away is not an option, as there is a very steep descent here. And going up is also not an option, because there is already a vent, it’s not very good to breathe the emissions there. But we got out of this place safely, continued to climb the volcano. As a result, they got up, it was very difficult. I’m still lying down.
Why were you crying on the volcano?
“Not because I was tough or scared. It’s emotions, you’re overwhelmed with feelings right now, I cried because of it. I enjoyed what I did. Such heights must be conquered, you cross a difficult path, at times you really surpass yourself. The height is 2700 meters, and there is still not enough oxygen at the top. It happens that on the volcano people get sick from desease. mountains (a painful condition associated with oxygen deprivation).
Coach Sergei Alexandrovich Konovalov climbed the volcano with us and his knees hurt. But he overcame himself, because it was not possible to go down at that time, especially alone. But he, despite the pain, got up with us.
– Did you also come down from the volcano in bad weather?
– And the sun had already come out when we were going down, we even burned. On some sections of the way back we just came down the hill on our butts.
It was very cool! I am very happy to have conquered the volcano again. Kamchatka is a place of my strength, it makes me think of many things and makes me much stronger at times.
“Not everyone can conquer a volcano.
– In the situation in which we found ourselves this time on the volcano, a girl with weak hands probably would not have coped. I don’t know what she would do (laughs). It’s good that Timur was with me at this difficult time, he professionally pulled me out of my panic. He coaches our junior girls, and this quality is a very big plus for the coach, Gerbulova told .
