The Norwegian prosecutor’s office officially charged Anders Besseberg with helping athletes from the aggressor country.

Anders Besseberg faces serious corruption charges. According to the Norwegian prosecutor’s office, the former president of the International Biathlon Union received bribes during his tenure. He was paid money in Russia, and with them the functionary had to help protect the interests of athletes from the aggressor country.

According to Inside the Games, Besseberg, who has led the IBU for 25 years, is especially keen on helping the Russians solve anti-doping problems. Such accusations were brought against him by the independent external review commission of the International Federation (ERC).

There were also accusations that member federations at the 2016 IBU Congress were bribed to vote to host the 2021 World Championships in Tyumen. All these crimes were committed between 2009 and 2018, when Besseberg and IBU General Secretary Nicole Resch resigned following the initiation of a criminal investigation.

According to the investigation, he received more than just money for his services. Besseberg, 77, was charged with receiving several expensive watches. He also allegedly used the services of prostitutes paid by other people, and he also agreed to free hunting abroad. Representatives of Russian biathlon are among those who helped finance these gifts.

Besseberg is also accused of using a BMW X5 for several years, and the rental costs were allegedly paid for by the Infront marketing agency.

The former IBU president faces up to 10 years in prison. At the same time, Besseberg himself predictably denies all allegations and claims that he never accepted a bribe and did not try to influence the anti-doping work of the IBU in favor of anyone.
