Biathlete Edward Latypov who became the second in the Yugra 50-kilometer ski marathon, told about the differences in overcoming the distance for representatives of the two winter sports.
Sergey Ustyugov became the winner of the Yugra Marathon 2023 in skating. Latypov lost to him for over two minutes. Biathlete Nikita Porshnev took third place with a gap of more than 4 minutes.
“Physically the race was not easy,” the correspondent quoted Latypov as saying. – My back was a little numb, after all I was carrying a tank with a large volume of liquid. The track in Khanty is specific, there are no slopes, there is nowhere to rest. The leg muscles made themselves felt, which must constantly work to maintain high speed on the plain. In terms of intensity, it was one of the hardest marathons for me. They are all different. Somewhere the participants go in a calm group and sort out the finish line. And then the marathon started from the first meters. Ustyugov immediately set the tone, arranged a lot of pins, it was not easy to follow him.
– At the 70-kilometer marathon in Monchegorsk, he did not cling to the tanks, he drank what the coaches gave on the track. Why did you have to carry food by yourself?
“The skiers have calculated everything, the coaches know the areas to stand or go, the athlete imagines where he wants to drink. We are not very experienced in this area, especially if the race lap is long. Which loop was in Monchegorsk?
– 10 kilometers.
– There are 25 in Khanty, it is more difficult to find places for coaches on the track: what if the thirst begins to torment, and there are still 20 km to go? Maybe the skiers are ready to be patient, it’s more difficult for us in the long races. I had to hang gels and liquids on myself. With the nutrition system and gels – two kilograms, not only behind the back, but in the lower back. For a long distance, the load is significant, with each kilometer it makes itself felt more and more. If I run other marathons, I will try to see more clearly.
– Ekaterina Noskova consulted with the coaches on the technique of the course before the Russian Ski Championship. Have you also consulted?
No, but I could run. On the flat ground, it didn’t make sense to push often. He saved strength through powerful repulsions, included his knee, pelvis, used inertia, rolled “on his foot”.
The federal television channel broadcast live all the main competitions of the season in biathlon and cross-country skiing in Russia.
