Chairman of the State Duma Committee on Physical Culture and Sports Dmitry Svishchev not surprised by the statement of the President of the National Olympic Committee (NOC) of Ukraine Sergei Boubka on the obligation for international federations to withdraw Russian and Belarusian athletes from competitions.
Previously, Bubka had demanded that all sports organizations comply with the recommendations of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on the expulsion of Russians and Belarusians. The 1988 Olympic pole vault champion made such a statement after the International Judo Federation allowed Russians and Belarusians to compete in Ulaanbaatar under a neutral flag.
– Bubka uses familiar rhetoric. There is nothing new for us in this, – the press service of the Committee for Physical Culture and Sports of the State Duma quotes Svishchev. – We advise him to resume the sporting aspect, and not the political statements. We remember him as a top athlete. The federations must make independent decisions, as the same International Tennis Federation and the International Judo Federation did. And no calls from anyone should act here. Russian athletes must and will perform in major competitions, because without them, world sport suffers losses. And the anti-Russian hysteria will stop sooner or later.
The IOC has recommended not allowing Russian athletes to compete due to the situation in Ukraine. Most international sports federations have followed this advice.
