Former Russian biathlete Albina Akhatova admitted that she likes to work as a coach, but because of the children, her opportunities in this field are limited.
– This is a very difficult question. I’m a mom first and foremost, I have two kids, so the options are a bit limited. To lead a team, you have to be there constantly. I can only fully work as a shooting coach during the summer preparatory period.
I had this experience in 2019. It happened partly thanks to Latypov. That season, he asked me to make him a new stock for the start of training, so when Vladimir Drachev offered me to work with the men’s team, I immediately accepted. I did two different stock designs for Edik, for most of the summer prep period they were engaged in tweaking them, looking for fit, fixing old, well-established mistakes.
In fact, I like being a coach. I can talk endlessly about shooting, fake designs and preparations,” the biathlete said in an interview with RT.
Akhatova also said she was not thinking of obstructing when her husband Maxim Maksimov was offered to work in the Russian national team.
– There was no such thought. In addition, Max loves his job very much. That’s what he knows how to do well, what he understands. Yes, and the teachers were outstanding: Maxim trained with Vladimir Alikin, with Valery Polkhovsky, with Nikolai Lopukhov. As a coach, he worked with Guryev, and with Anatoly Khovantsev, with the same Lopukhov. Now he works with Yuri Kaminsky, who is not just a great master, but a human flow. Athletes and specialists, entering this stream, can only develop, can only grow,” Akhatova said.
Akhatova is the 2006 Olympic relay champion and four-time world champion.
