First “TV Match” Dmitri Guberniev said Russian athletes are likely to miss four Olympics.
Earlier, Russian Fencing Federation President Ilgar Mammadov told that Olympic champions Sofia Velikaya, Yana Yegoryan and Sofia Pozdnyakova were not admitted by the FIE to international competitions. The athletes were on the FFR list of 24 athletes, but were among those whose applications were rejected by the international federation.
In March, the Congress of the International Fencing Federation (FIE) decided to allow Russian athletes, teams and officials to participate in international competitions. It has been reported that Russian fencers are waiting for admission criteria for tournaments. In March, the Executive Committee of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) recommended that international federations, if Russians are allowed to start, do so individually, in a neutral status, without participating in team events, and also exclude the participation of Russians. athletes associated with law enforcement.
– As I suggested earlier, all these admissions of Russian athletes by international federations mean nothing. All these tolerances are only on paper. For then there will be a mighty opposition. And draw up lists, like in a fencing federation, and possible boycotts of several countries, and all kinds of cancellations of competitions that will take place in countries that do not want to see our athletes.
Let’s take a very simple example. Very soon there will be a meeting of the International Ski Federation. Let’s say the FIS allows our athletes. And after? Skiing competitions take place in France, Italy, Germany, without forgetting the Baltic countries and, of course, Scandinavia. Unfortunately, apparently, none of these countries will allow Russian athletes. In addition, many of our athletes – almost the entire winter sports team and almost the entire summer sports team – are law enforcement, the IOC has talked about. Admission applies only to individual representatives of certain sports.
My view remains pessimistic. I think we won’t even miss two Olympics (the upcoming summer and winter), but four. And the opportunity to perform in the Olympics in the distant future, I think, will be for athletes who are now very young, who compete even as juniors. Maybe for boys or girls. And who are not bound by contracts with certain sports companies.
In any case, all these tolerances, I sum up, for many federations mean nothing! We will not play! And we still have to focus on domestic competitions to keep the sport in the country. Look for money, organize competitions, support national teams and, of course, our youth,” Guberniev said on .
