Honored Coach of Russia, General Director of the Moscow Figure Skating Federation Nina Moser in an interview with , she expressed the opinion that at some point the mentor must sever relations with the student and move on.
Moser’s students were Tatyana Volosozhar – Maxim Trankov, Ksenia Stolbova – Fedor Klimov, Natalya Zabiyako – Alexander Enbert, Evgenia Tarasova – Vladimir Morozov, Vera Bazarova – Yuri Larionov, Nicole Della-Monica – Matteo Guarise, Ashley Kane – Timothy Ledyuk, Alexa Kerim – Brandon Frazier. Now Daria Boyarintseva – Roman Pleshkov, Ekaterina Geinish and Dmitry Chigirev are training under her.
– Should the coach think about the future of his athlete?
— Over the years, my attitude towards these questions has changed a lot. One of St. Petersburg’s famous coaches once told me that “you only like your first students, then the treadmill.” The early years carried you with your athletes like a handwritten bag. With each new generation you try to find a common language, you are interested. And so you go higher and higher.
After Volosozhar and Trankov, I said to myself: enough is enough. Otherwise it turns into another life. At some point, I realized that we no longer exist as athletes and coaches…
– How is your family?
– Maybe yes. I realized that is not possible. One day, the paths must separate.
– For what?
– The closer you are to an athlete, the more you lose yourself, dissolve in a person, give him your soul and heart. I do so without waiting for an answer. I am always happy for an athlete when everything is going well for him: financially, in studies and in family matters.
To date, the number of athletes around the world I have worked with is insane. And it is impossible to deal with everyone for life. And for athletes, parting with the person who helped them can be painful. They think you are their property and should always be there. And I realized I had to break up and move on,” Moser told .
