Padin: ‘I wouldn’t say that the difference in working with the men’s and women’s teams is global’

Andrey Padin, coach of the Russian national biathlon team, told Metaratings.ru that there are no significant differences in working with men’s and women’s teams.

— You have worked with men’s and women’s teams. How important is the difference between them and how to work more comfortably?

We have a cyclical sport. I wouldn’t say the difference is global. I start from the fact that biathlon, like rifle skiing, is above all a male sport. Today, it has become feminine. The load on the human body is the same.

There is a small nuance only in the fact that the female races are slightly reduced. In cross-country skiing, men’s distances are reduced and assimilated to those of women, while in biathlon they are still different. That men and women perform an equivalent load. The difference is that females have a lower movement speed than males and the charge is the same.

– Do you have a breakdown of functionality between you, Mikhail Shashilov and Nikolai Zagursky at headquarters?

This division does not yet exist. We have both experienced athletes and newcomers in our group. We do not share our responsibilities, but work in groups, so we are interchangeable.

Padin worked for the Belarus national team in the 2021/22 season. Since March 2023, Padin has been working in Mikhail Shashilov’s group and will take part in the preparation of the Russian women’s team for the new season.
