26 year old coach Artem Istomine told how he perceived the criticism when he was appointed as the head of one of the biathlon groups.
Istomin’s group includes ten athletes: Kristina Reztsova, Ksenia Dovgaya, Ekaterina Noskova, Svetlana Mironova, Elizaveta Kaplina, Anastasia Goreeva, Larisa Kuklina, Natalya Gerbulova, Daniil Serokhvostov and Karim Khalili.
– There was a lot of criticism after your appointment from various scholars. How did you perceive it?
“They are not going to work themselves. If you don’t like it – object, object – suggest, suggest – act. I have a proverb in my father’s office. I remembered her. In addition, the professors of the institute taught me. They said, “Artem, who else is going to do this if not you? We have already done everything. It’s up to you.” Therefore, if there is no one to take care of it, we will take it and do it, regardless of our age.
Did you expect such a reaction?
Of course, I expected that. Probably, any adequate person understands that from the outside it looks somehow non-standard. But such a situation has developed in general in our biathlon. I didn’t cause it.
What’s the weirdest claim you’ve heard lately?
— The strangest claims come from those who know me and have seen how I work. When people say that I have comfort in the team, that the athletes came for the holidays. Ask the athletes: are the holidays for them or not? I do not think so. The fact that I don’t oppress them all the time is possible, yes. But at the same time, no relaxation is given to anyone.
