Gulyaev: ‘IOC recommendations allow further dismissal of Russians, which raises questions’

Russian Skating Union President Nikolai Gulyaev said the withdrawal of Russian athletes after recommendations from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) raises questions.

The International Skating Union (ISU) has previously confirmed the withdrawal of Russian athletes from starts under its auspices.

— In anticipation of the decision of the ISU Council, we regularly had a dialogue with our foreign colleagues, reasonably defending our position on the inadmissibility of discrimination based on nationality. However, admission to international departures was not tracked.

I can’t say that this decision surprised me. A similar situation has developed in a number of other international federations. The recommendations of the IOC authorize a new dismissal of the Russians, which, of course, raises reasonable questions.

The leadership of the ISU, dominated by representatives of anti-Russian countries, even despite significant financial losses, politically did not dare to take a step towards common sense. Well, one cannot underestimate the sincere desire of individual national federations to fight for medals in the absence of competition with representatives of our country.

We keep communicating with the ISU – the next board meeting will be in the fall, we will act only in the interest of Russian sport, coordinating our steps with the ROC and the Ministry of Sport in order to make our athletes the legal status to compete. And, of course, we continue to prepare for the season, ”said the press service of the Russian Skating Union, citing Nikolai Gulyaev.

In March 2023, the IOC issued recommendations on the possible return of the Russians to the biggest competitions. They include neutral status, individual clearance, no contracts with security forces and armed forces, and also suggest that the athletes did not come out in favor of the CWO.
