Maigurov is convinced that the IBU needs Russia as a country where it is comfortable to hold competitions against the backdrop of warming Europe

President of the Russian Biathlon Union (RBU) Viktor Maygurov believes that the International Biathlon Union (IBU) needs Russia in terms of marketing and as a country where, against the background of warming Europe, it is comfortable to hold competitions.

— Russia is interesting for the IBU, for example, in terms of marketing. The federation sells television rights to Eurovision, it is the bulk of the budget. In addition, many biathlon federations, especially those that are growing and developing, have taken the methodology of our school as a basis, have used our weapons. The refusal to hold competitions in Russia is also a loss. Especially in the context of the warming observed in Europe for more than a year, Maigurov told RT.

Maigurov said that the RBU has met all the criteria of the IBU to become a full member again. The issue should have been raised in September. Now, Maigurov believes, the solution to this problem has been postponed indefinitely.

On March 2, Russian and Belarusian biathletes were suspended from participating in international competitions.

In December 2017, the RRF’s status in the international union was downgraded to temporary member due to doping scandals with Russian athletes. This meant that until 2026 it was forbidden to hold competitions in Russia, and citizens of the country were banned from holding positions in the IBU.
