President of the Russian Biathlon Union (RBU) Viktor Maygurov stated that the decision to put Edward Latypov for the fourth leg of the men’s relay at the 2022 Games has been proven wrong.
The Russians were in the lead from the first leg of the relay race. Karim Khalili, Alexander Loginov and Maxim Tsvetkov provided Russia’s leadership. Latypov went into stage four 41 seconds ahead of France, but on the final firing line he misfired five times and picked up two penalty laps.
– Before the relay, we all wondered who and at what stage to put: there was in fact no choice. With Karim Khalili at the first stage, we guessed 100%. Now, looking back, we can say that the decision to place Latypov in fourth place turned out to be wrong. But to say that he was not ready at all due to a timeout is impossible – Edik has a personal bronze medal in Beijing,” Maygurov told RT.
The Russians were 45.3 seconds behind the Norwegians who won the race, the silver went to the French.
