I want to eliminate unhealthy foods from my diet as much as possible. Together, let’s fight against obesity! Chronicle of Veronika Stepanova

We skiers live an important part of the time in our little world. Either alone “in the forest”, or at the training camp, we meet other athletes – athletes in Kislovodsk, hockey players in Raubichi, etc. It gives the feeling that everyone is like us – with elastic muscles and athletic gait. False feeling! Every time I find myself in the metro in Moscow or St. Petersburg or even at the airport, I have a culture shock – how many young people around with obvious signs of obesity!

It seems I’m not the only one. “The Ministry of Health has calculated that over the past twenty years in Russia there have been six times more obese adolescents. If at the beginning of the 2000s there were 150 overweight people per 100,000 children, then in recent years – every 900 … every year the average body mass index in adolescents adds 1-2%.

I think I wouldn’t be wrong if I say that among my peers (I’m 22) it’s even worse. When we become adults, when we leave our parents, what do we do first? It’s true – what mom tried to ban.

Now a ten-year-old girl (my sister, for example) knows very well that the main cause of obesity is malnutrition. All those extra calories from white bread, rolls, burgers, sausages, candies, sodas, chips…

But in addition to calories, there are “wonderful ingredients” such as food colorings, flavorings, preservatives, stabilizers, thickeners, emulsifiers, antioxidants… Also trans fats and carcinogens. Did you forget anything?

And yet we continue to eat it. And grow. It’s just that some people then drive it with training, while others don’t.

It turns out, by the way, not for everyone.

I have been a member of the Russian national cross-country team since the fifth year. I don’t know of a ski career ruined by alcohol or drugs. But I know many, ruined by malnutrition. You can nod all you want to hormonal imbalances, to genetic characteristics, but if you consume more calories than you expend, you will inevitably gain weight. There will be no names, of course. But I also saw eating in the evening under the bed, and tantrums that reached the confectionery on the day of rest. What I saw there – I myself participated, it was.

By the way, there are no nutritionists in cross-country skiing. Neither here nor in the West.

I agree with any advertisement. Including fries, burgers and chocolate. And even mayonnaise. Everything that is not prohibited is permitted. Also, the ad doesn’t call for stuffing your belly with something every day. But I’m still curious: where is the advertising, conditionally, of apples and blueberries? Or oatmeal? In stores, all this is sold and, presumably, they are produced by some kind of farms that compete with hamburgers for our stomachs. Or do they think “the right thing will sell”?

Thankfully, body positivity as an ideology hasn’t really “entered” our home. All these “Every Body Happy” don’t work for us, at least they are not advertised.

It amazes me from the bottom of my heart when, when choosing business clothes or shoes on the Internet, I see a model in the photo, which I hope never to look like. I do not want to be misunderstood: overweight women also need sportswear, for someone the sight of such a “girlfriend” in tights and a tight T-shirt will be much more inspiring than Teresa Johaug. But constantly promoting the thesis that obesity is absolutely normal is wrong. Instead, it would be correct to “move” that this is a disease that can and should be treated. Like teenage acne, also, by the way, caused by malnutrition.

I have no problem with obesity, on the contrary, my BMI (body mass index) is closer to the lower threshold of normal. But that’s because I train 4-6 hours a day. If I had stopped or greatly reduced the volumes, they would certainly have appeared. And all because there is still something to work on in terms of self-discipline.

Yes, I eat hamburgers and sweets, and – horror! – fleas. Everything is sometimes. It is greed, irresistible desires. This is where I start the fight. I want to eliminate unhealthy foods from my diet as much as possible. At least those that are consumed in the form of snacks and snacks. Join me, let’s fight obesity together!
