Spain’s National Olympic Committee (NOC) has dropped its bid to host the 2030 Winter Olympics, according to Marca.
The reason for this was the disagreement on the distribution of ski competitions between Catalonia and Aragon. Spanish NOC President Alejandro Blanco has finally announced the withdrawal of the country’s bid to host the 2030 Winter Games.
Blanco held a press conference in which he admitted that the body he chairs is “not in a position to present an Olympic project”, even if he did not close the door to “future projects ” since 2034. Catalonia and Aragon have already announced that they are not giving up on future opportunities.
This is the fourth Olympic project that has not been implemented since Blanco became NOC president in 2005.
“The image we created for the IOC and the international press was not the best,” admitted Blanco. “It was a project that would revitalize the territory of the Pyrenees, create jobs and improve the image of Spain, in addition to integration, but politics mixed with sport.
The location of the 2030 Olympics will be announced in 2023. In 2026, the Winter Games will be held in Italy.
