In the new season of 2022/2023, athletes and fans need to get used to the new rules.

There will be significant changes in international biathlon from the new season. According to the International Biathlon Union, they decided to follow the advice of the legendary Norwegian Bjorndalen and change the rules.

According to changes from IBU, points, world championships and prize money will change in the 2022/23 season.

Now, with the gold award, the first place in the World Cup race carries 90 points instead of 60, and the second – 75 instead of 54. Positions 7 to 40 will give the same number of points.

Changes to the points system during the Biathlon World Cup stages (then and now):

1. 60 – 90

2. 54 – 75

3.48 – 60

4.43 – 50

5.40 – 45

6.38 – 40

In addition, it was decided to make the World Cup an independent tournament. From now on, for him, as well as for the Olympic Games, points will not be awarded and performances at the world championship will not affect the position in the World Cup.

There will also be changes to the accrual of prize money. Until 2024, IBU plans to increase the number of places where athletes will receive financial rewards. Now in individual races, money is received only for places in the top 20.

In the second phase, in the period from 2024 to 2026, the amount of prize money for the highest place will increase. According to current rules, the winner of the race receives 15,000 euros, of which taxes still have to be paid in accordance with the law of the countries hosting the competition.

Remember that the new biathlon season 2022/23 will start in 5 months – on November 29, with the men’s individual races in the first stage of the World Cup, which will be hosted by Finnish Kontiolahti.
