Former Russian biathlete Dmitry Shamaev explained to why he changed his sports citizenship to Romanian.
Shamaev started playing for Romania in 2021. Earlier, as part of the Russian junior team, he became the world champion as part of the relay team, and Dmitry is also the winner of the Russian championship.
– I tried to get into the national team, and it was always difficult to do so. At the same time, I showed good results at the Russian Cup, won medals, but it was not enough all the time. The years passed, I got older, and the SBR headed for rejuvenation, and each year the road closed more and more for me (smile).
After the 2019/20 season, I received a call from Moldova and offered to move. I didn’t like their conditions very much and continued to train in Russia.
At the same time, my wife told me that maybe she should try to join another team, for example in Romania. And before me, three Russian biathletes joined the Romanian team – Lena Chirkova, Nastya Tolmacheva and Tolya Oskin. And I called Nastya with a question, is it possible to go to them. I sent him all my results, portfolio. She took control of this file and helped me a lot in it, pressed me, because Romanians often do nothing until the end. But that doesn’t apply to everyone – I’m very grateful to the person who helped me get citizenship and get into the club!
A month after throwing away my portfolio, they called me: “Let’s go to Romania. It was in July, and on March 28 I received my Romanian passport. Although I had a very good last season in Russia, and I was second in the Izhevsk Rifle, and at almost all stages of the Russian Cup, I had a personal medal. Maybe they would even take me into the team… But the story is silent (smiles).
