biathlete Dmitry Shamaev who has been playing for the Romanian national team since 2021, told why he organizes training camps in Russia and why training in Romania is dangerous.
Shamaev started playing for Romania in 2021. Earlier, as part of the Russian junior team, he became the world champion as part of the relay team, and Dmitry is also the winner of the Russian championship.
Why is part of your training camp taking place in Russia this summer?
“The conditions in Romania are not the most favorable. There are many tourists driving cars and walking along the roller track, so every workout can be your last. Also, there are bears running around like our dogs in the streets. Nine bears live right next to the base where I constantly train. When after dinner everyone goes to their room, it’s dark, the bears come to the base. That is, they are walking where you trained an hour ago, they are already looking for food. That’s why I don’t really like it there. Another minus is that the roller skate is small, 2.5 km, and the terrain is weak, there is nowhere to run cross-country. Cross-country skiing almost all of my training takes place on the ski slope. This year, I decided to stay in Russia, to find more interesting grounds and stadiums. Also, this year the world championship will be held in Nove Mesto, there are no mountains there, so I decided that.
The only problem is that I am unarmed. I train like a skier, because I have weapons in Romania, and it’s difficult to get them out. To obtain documents for the export of weapons, you need to obtain special documents, and since I come to Romania only to train, I simply don’t have time for that. So, I train without a rifle, I wonder what will happen in winter (smile). My main goal is to physically add this year!
– And the rest of the Romanian biathletes are now training in Romania?
— Yes, they train in Romania. They train in a group, it’s especially true when you go to the mountains. If a bear gets caught, chances are it won’t have lunch with you today (laughs). Seriously, the group is safer, because more noise, the bear must not climb. But that’s not true (laughs). You can also use firecrackers.
– Firecrackers ?
– Yes, I went camping, I took firecrackers with me. You set it on fire every 20 minutes – scares the bears away. If there are no firecrackers, you will be whistling all over the forest. It’s like it’s scary to train there,” Shamaev told .
