The International Biathlon Union (IBU) provided the former biathlete of the Russian national team Daria Virolainen the right to represent Finland in international competitions in the 2023/24 season, according to the Finnish Biathlon Federation website.
In July, reported that the 34-year-old athlete was organizing a training camp in Altai at her own expense, she was training under Leonid Myakishev. Last season, Virolainen competed twice in Finland, where she has lived for six years. In September 2022, Myakishev told that the biathlete could start playing for the Finnish national team in international competitions.
Virolainen is the eldest daughter of three-time Olympic champion Anfisa Reztsova. The biathlete is 34 years old, she is the European champion in the single mixed relay, she twice stood on the podium of the World Cup. The athlete received Finnish citizenship in 2021 and last participated in international biathlon competitions in 2017-2018.
Biathletes from the Russian and Belarusian national teams are currently not allowed to compete in the IBU due to the situation in Ukraine.
