“I was going to climb Elbrus last year, but the Ministry of Emergency Situations turned us back due to bad weather” – Chudov

Olympic medalist in Vancouver and triple world champion in biathlon Maxim Chudov told about the conquest of Elbrus, the highest mountain in Europe.

Chudov has twice won the world championship relay and at the 2008 World Cup in Östersund he won the sprint. Today he is one of the leaders of the Bashkir branch of the Dynamo company and is a member of the executive committee of the Russian Biathlon Union (RBU). In early August, he successfully climbed Elbrouz (5642 meters).

– The idea belonged to the Central Council of the Dynamo Society and its chairman Anatoly Gulevsky. The ascension was timed to coincide with the centenary of the Dynamo movement. Last year we were going to conquer the highest point of Russia and Europe, but everything ended in failure, the Ministry of Emergency Situations deployed us due to bad weather: gusts of wind, snowstorm, thunderstorms, etc. This time we came early, did a 10 day training camp, got ready, trained our joints.

The group consisted of 13 people, all under the age of 45. There were also athletes and leaders from regional Dynamo companies. The first week we walked along the Elbrus region and climbed up to 5,100 meters above sea level. Then we went to the foot of Elbrus, where the last ski lifts were laid. We got used to it for a few days and then we started. We went out at night, hoping to climb the mountain early in the morning. The guides clearly calculated the time, which allowed the whole group to reach the objective. Dawn met on Elbrus and successfully descended to base.

Is it easier to conquer the summit at night than during the day?

– Imagine that there is such a practice. We started moving around half past one, walked in a line, not hurrying anywhere, illuminating the way with lanterns. We didn’t feel any discomfort,” Chudov told .
