Club choreographer Moskvina said she was inspired by the ‘Queen’s Move’ series when working on Ugozhaev’s new program.

Choreographer Valeria Chistyakova in an interview with explained why she decided to stage a single Nikolai Ugojaev chess program.

Ugozhaev, 17, is engaged in the group of Veronika Daineko and Dmitry Khromin (Club of Tamara Moskvina). In 2022, he becomes a bronze medalist at the Russian-Chinese Youth Games. Chistyakova has worked at the Moskvina club since 2021.

— You work with Nikolai Ugozhaev. Nikolai Moroshkin often admires his jumps, but tell us about it from the point of view of art.

“He is an extraordinary skier. When the question arose of a new program, I decided to implement an idea that had been maturing for a long time. Do you remember the Queen’s Move which made a lot of noise a few years ago? I had the idea of embodying a similar character on ice. We decided to create a male version. A photo of Latvian grandmaster Mikhail Tal caught our eye with his charismatic gestures, and we thought: it’s definitely time to tell a chess story!

We have an abstract chess player. Kolya conveys the athlete’s thoughts on the ice, his desire to win the match, the building of moves in his head, and even the confidence that he can crush his opponent. We are still finalizing the production so that the picture will be read as much as possible,” Chistyakova told .
