“There is a thirst for competition, I realized it this summer in the triathlon.” Skater Trofimov on motivation and training in the mountains

Olympic medalist in speed skating Sergei Trofimov will soon open the season, before which he had a restart on motivation. Firstly, this year he became a father, and secondly, a business team was created for which he plays.

About his travels with Daria Beskrovnyh from the skater family – in an interview with .

What will be remembered this summer?

— Last year we didn’t manage to go to the mountains, but this year we managed. Mountain training is very important. It’s very cool to have been there with my family. The first month with Leva, we were at home. Yuri Dmitrievich (Belyaev – coach, approx.) agreed, said that you should not rush, you can stay at home for a month, then decide what to do. I can say with certainty that I am satisfied with how everything went, that I traveled to training camp with my family. Many said it would be difficult, that we couldn’t cope with it, but Dasha and I managed to do it.

What mountains have you visited?

– First they were in Arkhyz, then they moved to Terskol, just at the foot of Elbrus.

– That is to say that Leo mastered two mountain bases?

– Yes, we were a little worried before Arkhyz, because children are very sensitive to weather conditions, and in the mountains they change very quickly. We adapted for 5-7 days at an altitude of 1600 meters, then we decided to go higher by car and realized that Levka copes perfectly with everything. We went to Terskol with no worries.

I traveled by car. So Lev has been to the mountains before, but hasn’t flown yet. But that’s for now!

Did you manage to work well in the mountains?

– Yes, we cycled, hiked. Dumbbells, special exercises. Everything is as it should be in this part of the year. The financing of all this was taken over by our sponsor, with the support of which a sales team was formed.

Is this extra support important?

“I wouldn’t say it’s extra. It is the main medium. Sponsors pay for everything. Training on ice, meals, lodging, gym.

— What is the sponsor’s interest in investing in speed skating?

– I think it’s standard – they want to grow their brand. Well, what drives us is that people want to invest in your sport.

– When did you first go on the ice out of season?

– In Minsk. We arrived on July 9, but went out on the ice at the end of the month. If this had happened sooner, the ice would have knocked down my training form that I had acquired for triathlon.

What motivated you to return to triathlon?

– Last year the coach said that we would include him in the training plan. And the load received there will go in addition to that needed for the skates. And I think she fits in very well.

What don’t you like to do anymore, running or swimming?

– When I participated in 2018, swimming seemed very difficult, but this year everything went well. I did everything in my own strength, even a slightly better result than expected.

– Did you prepare specifically for the swim leg?

– I swam twice in the Minsk Sea (Zaslavsky reservoir – editor’s note). Once a week, the second time in three days to tone the arms.

– Is triathlon an urgent need for extra movement or just an emotional overload?

Everything you listed. I wanted to unburden myself and move a bit from the training process to the competition process, which is to say that there really is this thirst for competition and we have to reject it. I like triathlon a lot, I like how it looks, how the “transits” take place, it looks cool.

– There is a lot of interest in triathlon from amateurs. It is expensive? I’m not talking about a good start, but more about the entry level and the preparation for it.

– It’s too expensive. Because you have to buy a lot of extra things, if there was nothing – sneakers, a bicycle, a watch, a heart rate monitor. Again, there is an opposite side. Triathlon includes simple sports, you can swim in the river, you can run on the street. Speed skating has more exclusivity and specificity – without an oval you won’t be able to do it. It is clear that there are competitions in the world and on natural ice, but if we are talking about high results, then the ice must be of good quality, on an indoor ice rink, and you have to practice on it during the three quarters of the year.

– How is your psychological state, given that there is no news from the ISU? Where to find motivation?

– There are agreements with the sponsor to have bonuses in the future. Additional motivation comes, in principle, from my team, in which the guys train hard. The psychological reserves in this case therefore turn against themselves. In addition, there is always a feeling of dissatisfaction in sports, which subconsciously forces you to keep in shape.

– Is there any regret that at the beginning of your career you didn’t consider all these additional motivational options, but just raced?

“I think everything happened at the right time in my life. If I had dealt with all of this from the start, I just wouldn’t have pulled it off, I would have exhausted myself along the way.

– Were you invited to the national team of Kazakhstan?

– They called. Again, I don’t want to say how it could turn out, but by then a decision had already been made regarding the team and I carefully declined the invitation from Kazakhstan.

What do you think of those who agree?

“I sympathize with their decision.

– What are your plans? And Leo and Dasha, of course.

– Now we resume competitions in Minsk, then we will return home – repairs are underway in our apartment. At the beginning of September, we hope to move into a new apartment, and together with Dasha, we will begin to settle there. And then – back to the mountains, we go to Arkhyz.

– Top 3 mountain workouts for Russia?

– Third place – Dombay, second – Arkhyz, first – Elbrus.

– Since you are studying the mountainous regions of Russia, the question is: what is missing for the preparation for the mountain training camp?

– Skating rink on the high plateau or in the middle mountains. And we also found that there are few normal power rooms. I’m not talking about a high level gym, just the basic one – a barbell and enough discs.

— I look at pictures all the time and get worried when you’re cycling in mountain camps, considering how our drivers treat the riders…

We are traveling with an escort. I can say that the most understanding drivers in Terskol, local drivers, calmly wait for you to reach the intermittent marking line. The most aggressive are in the Krasnodar Territory, in this regard there is garbage there, they should ride more calmly.

– Was it tempting to move from Nizhny to Kolomna?

– Certainly not in Kolomna, it’s like a training camp. I don’t want to leave Nizhny just yet, but as we travel the country, I can say that we are in search. We think where we would like to (go). I want to live near the mountains, I love them.

– What are the priorities for the competitions of the season?

– Priorities – try to backtrack on all starts.

– Even the Russian Cup stages?

– I think so. By the way, I read an interview with Daniil Aldoshkin and want to support his opinion about the championship of Russia on obviously slow ice. I think such competitions and the Spartakiad of the fittest should take place on better quality ice.

– Someone will say, “What difference does it make to you to make money?” »

– It’s psychologically important for me to see those seconds on the scoreboard that I’ve accumulated. Not that you gave 100 percent and saw that the seconds aren’t as fast as they would be on different quality ice.

– Maybe the ice cream in Kemerovo will be better?

— I think that last year the ice potential in Kemerovo was realized by 30%. You have to experiment and work on it. Again, had there been international starts we would have met the need for fast ice, but now they are not there and I want to show the seconds I worked for.
