Russian biathlete Daria Virolainen admitted she hoped fans would understand after changing her sporting citizenship to Finnish.
Earlier, it became known that the International Biathlon Union (IBU) allowed Virolainen to represent Finland in international competitions in the 2023/24 season. This summer, the 34-year-old athlete organized a training camp in Altai at his own expense and trained under the guidance of coach Leonid Myakishev.
– Today in Russia, as soon as athletes talk about changing their citizenship, they start stigmatizing them in every possible way. Do you expect hate?
– No, I hope the fans will understand. Why wait for a little negativity? – quotes the words of Virolainen “Championship”.
Last season, Virolainen competed twice in Finland, where she has lived for six years. Virolainen is the eldest daughter of three-time Olympic champion Anfisa Reztsova.
