“I will never participate in the Olympics for myself, I was there for the country, for my parents and my child” – Zhurova

Olympic speed skating champion and deputy of the State Duma of the Russian Federation Svetlana Jourova told that she would not want to go to the Olympics now, that there is no prior atmosphere for such a competition, in the current situation, such participation is difficult from a point of view moral.

Earlier on Tuesday, Russian President Vladimir Putin, during a plenary meeting at the Eastern Economic Forum (EEF) in Vladivostok, said that when it comes to participating in the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, one must be guided by the interests of the athletes themselves.

— I wouldn’t say that for athletes, participation in the Olympic Games is a question of life and death, but it is fundamental. Athletes dedicate their lives to it, the nuance of relying on athletes is there. Not everything is so clear about our trip to the Olympics, citizens will evaluate it differently. Previously, the percentage of those who favored neutral status or were calm about it was higher, now it is lower. Today the prevailing opinion is that athletes should be patient, not paying attention to the Olympics, but participating in competitions here, and the country’s leadership must create such conditions so that the Olympics are not the only tournament worth seeking out.

In the USSR, the winners of the Spartakiad received no less than the Olympic champions. Yes, we remember the Olympic champions, only them, but because the press does not write about others. We need to change our attitude in this regard. Draw your attention not only to football, hockey, conditionally, but also to other sports. But I will say this, if I was on the team and, like in swimming, half of me would be allowed, and the other wouldn’t, for some wacky reasons and criteria – I don’t know if I’d make it go or not. My comrades and friends who trained with me don’t go, but I go. I would be sort of ashamed in front of them. But this is my opinion, someone will say differently. I am such a person in life. Then, you know, everyone has their peaks, at 17 I could already be a serious athlete and compete, and someone opens up later. It also happens that once a cycle a person becomes a champion and no one hears him anymore. It is difficult to advise someone, everyone has their own destiny. It is also difficult to judge. To be honest, I wouldn’t like the Olympics now, I’m not in the same mood. It was important for me to come there for the country, for my parents, for my child. It is difficult in the current situation; for my part, I would never play. I cannot agree with the fact that we absolutely have to go to the Olympics,” Zhurova told .

At the end of March, the IOC announced recommendations for the admission of Russian and Belarusian athletes to international competitions. Recommendations include individual admission, neutral status, banning participation in team sports, and banning participation of athletes associated with security forces or who have expressed support for the SVO. The IOC did not extend an invitation to the ROC for the 2024 Games by the set date of July 26.

The Olympic Games in the French capital will be held from July 26 to August 11, 2024.
