“I was persuaded to stay.” Nigmatullina opened up about how she could have ended her career due to depression after the 2018 Olympics

Olympic medalist in biathlon Ulyana Nigmatullina spoke about the most difficult period of his sports career.

—What was the final stage of your fall?

— 2019, when she did not qualify for the main team. I studied with Vitaly Noritsyn, and already the summer training, for many reasons, turned out to be mediocre.

It was a year after the Pyeongchang Olympics, very difficult for me and somewhat embarrassing. There was a depressive state, internal exhaustion. Well, after not qualifying anywhere in November, I realized: there was nothing to lose. That’s when we started working with Ilshat.

— And it turns out that this turned out to be a good thing?

– Yes. Now I always try to keep in mind that even serious failures can help change your life for the better.

— You and I almost didn’t communicate at the 2018 Olympics, because it was very cold there and all the athletes immediately ran away from training to the locker rooms. But I nevertheless had the impression that the depressive state was already there. And not just you alone.

– It’s true. Personally, I was really looking forward to this vacation. I was once at the Children’s Olympics and imagined how cool it could be in the version of the real Games. And here everything is so gray, cold, uncomfortable…

— And the team is made up of four people against the whole world.

– Yes. It was even difficult to build a team with such a limited number of people. So we did our best to stick together.

“It seems to me that after experiencing something like that, most would think: Is it worth continuing?”

– I thought about it too. At the start of the next season, she even asked me to be able to leave training camp and not have to go through the selection process. It seemed to me that everything I was doing was completely useless. I didn’t want anything at all! But they persuaded me to stay,” RT quotes Nigmatullina.

At the beginning of February, the biathlete became a mother, after which she decided to return to sports. In May, she changed her sports registration from the Udmurtia team to the Tyumen region team.
