Olympic medalist in biathlon Irina Kazakevich told that she now trains with the idea that she will always be able to perform on the international stage.
The biathlete made her Biathlon World Cup debut in the 2020/21 season. Kazakevich twice won World Cup relay medals.
Russian and Belarusian biathletes have been suspended from international competitions under the auspices of the International Biathlon Union (IBU) in spring 2022.
— With what thoughts do you follow Russian athletes who now have the opportunity to participate in international competitions?
— I think it’s very cool, absolutely cool. I don’t know how to describe it, because now I will train again thinking that at least one more time, but I will enter the international stage. This will probably be my driving force to move forward. Even though it might not be in a year or two or three years, I would still like to go back and play and feel that atmosphere again.
The girls and I were talking recently about how you were at the World Cup, the whole atmosphere, how everyone was warming up, everything going on there was a little more special. Naturally, all the conditions are met here too, but it was still something different. There are many people who speak a different language, a different communication, a different culture, other cities, other nations. All of this is also interesting, it sort of brings things together. You feel like you’re part of something bigger. And now our world is in such a difficult state, so now it’s always difficult. And even if they told us right away: “That’s it, come back. Playing everywhere with the flag, with the anthem…I think that would be impossible now and extremely difficult for everyone,” Kazakevich told .
