“I put the gun down, and the coach said, ‘It’s a disqualification!’ — skier Shestakova, who switched to biathlon, about training errors

Alina Shestakova who switched from cross-country skiing to biathlon ahead of the 2023/24 season, spoke in an interview with about the mistakes she makes when training in her new sport.

Shestakova made her biathlon debut with 47th place in the sprint at the Russian Summer Championships in Tyumen. In the individual race, with 11 penalties, the athlete finished 35th.

— Natasha Shevchenko, due to her inexperience, confused her shooting position during the competition last season. Do you have such errors on the turn?

“It happened during training that I came in and had to shoot prone, but I stood up, meaning I shot prone while standing. And the coach says: “You can barely get to a standing position, but you want to get into a prone position” (smiles). I put my rifle on, I drive and he says, “But that’s a disqualification.” And he explains to me that I need to get a clip and so on.

It turns out that I was already ready to stand, but my grip was closed. I just opened it, and I’m told that’s also a disqualification, because the clip is already inserted, it needs to be removed.

— So the settings haven’t been mixed up yet?

“The coach tells me that when we arrive at the line, we look at the wind, the flag and especially its configuration. And I get to the line during the race and I check: “11 – 11. Everything is fine.” I’m ready, I look, and I have 12, and I understand that that’s not where I have to shoot, I have to move a little (smiles). She prepared poorly, apparently she moved her shoulder,” Shestakova told .
