Triple Olympic biathlon champion representing Slovakia Anastasia Kuzmina decided to resume her professional career, the 39-year-old athlete will participate in the 2024 European Championships.
The tournament will take place in Slovakia from January 24 to 28.
“It was not an easy decision at all. But in recent years, I feel more like a sparring partner for young athletes than their coach. I kept myself in shape so that young people could follow me. Yes, I have had several successful returns to biathlon, but this one will be really difficult and different. Firstly, the break has been much longer than before, and it really is something completely different.
Many fans told me: “Nastya, everything is so good with you, why don’t you come back (laughs).” But looking good and training at a more or less amateur level does not mean performing at world level. So it will be very, very difficult, because I want to please the fans again, get results.
I can’t imagine how I will perform at the European Championships, we know that countries approach it differently, we don’t even know what kind of races there will be, so I can’t imagine what I can show in terms of results. But I’m definitely not going to participate just to greet the fans. I will give everything,” Kuzmina said, according to Slovensky Biatlon.
Kuzmina announced her retirement in 2019. In addition to three Olympic gold medals, she has three Olympic silver medals, one World Championship gold medal and 18 World Cup victories.
