The Japanese city of Sapporo has withdrawn its bid to host the 2030 Winter Olympics, said Yasuhiro Yamashita, president of the country’s Olympic Committee.
The move comes amid corruption scandals surrounding the Tokyo Summer Olympics, which have affected public opinion about the Games.
“It’s possible that moving too quickly with applications will leave a permanent wound on the value of the sport.” “I feel sorry for the people of Sapporo and Hokkaido,” Kyodo news agency quoted Yamashita as saying at the press conference.
Sapporo Mayor Katsuhiro Akimoto said the city could apply to host the 2034 Winter Olympics or the Games at a later date. Sapporo previously hosted the Winter Games in 1972.
Sweden, Switzerland and France are candidates to host the 2030 Games.
